Is it ok to bring a minor into a pub in London, just for lunch or dinner?

He is 15 and will be traveling with me (his mom) and his aunt. While she and I may have a pint with our meal, he obviously would not drink. I just want to know if it's ok for minors to even enter a pub to eat.

  1. Depends on the pub....some pubs thinks it okay during the days (lunch time) later in the night when people come out to drink and get rowdy, it's usually prohibited....usually after 9-10 pm.

  2. Lunch is definately fine. Dinner is okay as long as you mention something his mom. If it's a weekend night, you may want to be out of there by 9pm. There's nothing wrong with a 15 yr old seeing people drink beer, but it's a sensative age for them seeing people drunk.

  3. Why wouldn't it be? I'm sure you can

  4. yes - the point of a "pub" (a traditional authentic one - in the sense of a "public meeting place" is to welcome people of all ages and some places - even pets.

  5. Absolutely! Pubs in the UK welcome the family. It's more of a meeting house then a bar. It's a great place to eat, too.

  6. as long as the pub serves food then you will be ok

  7. Yes, i think it would be fine. Just as long as it is not too late. After 9pm or 10pm would be too late. That is usually when more of a party atmosphere comes out.

  8. Hi

It depends on the pub.  Most pubs will allow minors to be brought in the pub during the day, especially if they serve food, however some don't.

Generally pubs in central London are more child and food friendly, and so called "gastropubs" - pubs which pride themselves on their high-quality menus - almost always welcome children.

Some of the more traditional, smoky pubs do not allow children however if you stay around the centre you will generally find somewhere to eat.

If you are travelling outside London you may have to be a bit more careful, however the rules regarding children are almost always clearly displayed on the walls so you shouldn't worry about it.

The pub seems to occupy a place in British culture quite different from that of the american bar - it is not uncommon to see three or even four generations of the same family in a pub on a Sunday afternoon and christenings, weddings and funerals are often celebrated in the pub.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy London.

  9. It is in the US.  I don't know about the UK.  Your child is getting to the age where they start worrying about it though.  No one is worried a 6 year old is going to try to get a drink, at 15 there is that possibiility

  10. Pubs are not not like bars in teh US. Pub is short for "Public House"- a gathering spot in the village. I have never encountered a situation wher a child was not allowed in accompnaied buy an adult.
