  1. While I do not condone breaking laws, the chances of this magical "land owner" finding you the night you camp is bleak.

  2. In Scotland we have the Scottish Outdoor Access Code which gives the right to roam anywhere, except from gardens, as long as you act responsibly. So that would mean putting out your fire and taking all rubbish away. Think its different elsewhere though.

  3. A lot of the land is owned by someone, so you'll have to have permission (usually written) from the land owner.

So it is alright to camp, as long as you have written permission from the owners.

However it is much safer on campsites. There you are with others, and if you have an emergency situation, you are in a better area to be accessed by ambulances.

  4. Every scrap of land in the UK is owned by someone, so technically, unless you have the land owner's permission, you're trespassing.

English farmers have been known to shoot people who are on their land illegally- it's not a risk I'd take.

  5. If you have the landowner's permission

  6. Most land is owned by someone and you'll need their permission...

  7. have a friend who camps in the wilds of scotland , never had a problem . i suppose the more remote the better.

  8. If you don't have the landowner's permission, don't do it. If you do decide to do it anyway, then you may very well be met by a disgruntled farmer with a shotgun at 5am who is bringing in his cows for milking. If you really do want to camp away from a designated campsite then go to a farmhouse and ASK if you can camp in one of their fields. My friends did this on silver DofE once and the farmer agreed - the worst that they can say is no.

TBH you're going to be better off on a proper campsite because you have toilets and showers and whatnot.
