Is it ok to change dogs name?

I am getting a 7 month old puppy (Casey's brother) his name is Odie because his previous owners have a cat named Garfield. I thought of changing his name to Codie so it wouldn't seem that different to him, or would it not matter if we changed it to something completely different? Here is his picture, http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f34/hcrate/Codie.jpg pretty cute huh?

  1. Ahhhh, very cute dog.

You can change the name. When I changed a dog's name I used the old & new name together for about a week & then just dropped the old name. It is really easy & won't even confuse your dog.

    Congratulations.

Edit, I changed the name from Casey to Ginger.

  2. sound the same it should be easy my take a while i change my dogs name from tini 2 Jackie and she responds no problem

  3. You could change the name to Cody, the dog won't mind. We have 4 dogs, and we call them all different names, and they always answer, even when we call them by the wrong dog's name!

    For example,

our dog Rocky is also called Rock Rock and Rock Brocka.

Petunia is also Tooney, Looney Tunes, Toonya, Pretty PetoonToon.

Baby is also The Boy or just Boy.

Amelia is also Mamelia, Millie, and Mill-mill.

And the dogs don't mind one bit, as long as we're giving them the attention they will answer to anything!

  4. He's so adorable. It'll take some time for him to respond to a new name, but you can change it to whatever you want - dogs can easily learn to respond to a new name. Our Lucy was originally a Daisy before we adopted her and she learned her name quickly.

  5. SOme experts recommend that you change the dogs name when they are being moved from one environment to another because it can help them understand that they are starting a new life that has new rules.

Meanwhile - my dogs end up with multiple names or names morphing even if they stay with the same family.

I had a friend that had a dog named Cricket - but her husband called the same dog Scooter.  I had a dog named Pakuk that would answer to Goose - because I called her my "silly goose" when she did something silly and then it just got shortened to goose.

The dog will respond to you tone as much as to the word.

  6. My newest dog was named Shaggy by his former owners (not sure why as he is a GSD and not shaggy at all). When I picked him up from the Rescue Group 4 weeks ago, I renamed him Riley. I used the new name a lot while petting and playing with him. He now responds to Riley and comes when he is called. As he is 3 years old and learned the new name, I see no reason you should not name your new dog whatever you want. Simply use the new name a lot when you are playing with him, he will get the idea quickly.

  7. very cute dog...well if the dog is too comon with the name odie he will not respong to codie ....because he is used to odie  but maybe you will still be able to change the name

  8. aw that's a cute doggy. lol i like how the owners named him Odie and their cat Garfield.

we got my dog when he was about 6 or 7 months and his owners named him.......Chocolate Milk.....yea i didn't really um like that name so we changed it.(to Harly) every time u  feed him or play with him  call him by the name u want. its easy because hes still young. but don't change the name when he gets older.

    good luck&& hope this helps!!

  9. I don't think it's a problem. We adopted our dog, Cosmo. He didn't have a name (to anyone's knowledge) when we got him, though. He was "brought in by a man who said he found him wandering the streets" (which could be possible, but knowing that he has a little trouble with his legs, chances are he gave Cosmo up), and sat in the shelter until we brought him home.

It took him a while to get used to his new name, but I believe it's because the shelter said he was about two years old at the time. That's a big difference compared to your seven month-young pup (who is adorable, by the way).

So, again, I don't think it would be any problem at all. ^-^

Good luck with your new pup!

  10. I have always felt that you are the one that has to live with the name of the dog every day. I adopted a pup with a bad name and changed his name. Within two days he adjusted to his new name and home. BTW very cute Basset Hound ( it appears ).

  11. My dog is called odie :)

Try to keep it similar so he doesn't get confused. Codie is a nice name.

    Other suggestions:

    Toby

    Moby

    Tony

    Coby

    Rudy

  12. Dogs don't care what you call them. How you call them is the important thing. Name him anything you want. Just call him with love in your voice & he'll come to you. By the way, he's adorable. Beagle puppies are SO CUTE.

  13. codey isnt much different so thats totally fine

  14. the names sound so similar that the dog probably won't notice the difference. try calling him codie, i bet he responds. dogs don't hear words the way we do. both names will sound the same to him.

Oh and yes, he is very cute!
