we have liked each other for a very long time and recently come to realize that we have family that is the same. You see, my great grandpa and her great great grandpa would have been brothers. making my great great grandpa and her great great great grandpa would , be the same person i think. we began thinking that we were much more distant than this (we thought 6th cousins) but after i have done some research i have noticed that we are actually 3rd cousin "once removed". whatever that means? i am just wondering if it is ok if we still see each other?

  1. "once removed" means a divorce happened doesn't it? Which means your not related I would assume. If you really like each other go for it, your family might not be so easy to tell though.

  2. Yes you are fine.

Genetically you run the risk of mutation with first cousins (not removed)... after that genetically and legally its a green light.

Now to get onto the relationship with your 3rd cousin once removed.

The 3rd cousin part tells which level of grand parents you share.  Yor first cousin has the same grand parents as you.  Your second cousin has the same great grand parents, your thrid cousin has the same great great grandparents as you.

Having a first, second, or thrid, cousin however dosen't always fill in the gap.  What about your first cousin's child?  You don't share any grand parents with them.  Your first cousin's child's great grandparents, are your grand parents.  See how this dosen't equal out?  This is where the "removed" part comes from.  The "removed" part fills in the over head by saying how many generations you are from your cousin.  To determine how "removed" you are.  You find the smallest numberd cousin and find how many generations away from that person you are.

So for the example above... your cousins son is your first cousin once removed.  This is because since you and your cousins son don't share a eqivalent grand parent, you find the smallest numberd cousin you share a relationship with (your first cousin) and count the generations in difference (1).

For you... 3rd cousin once removed means that person is the parent or child of someone who has the same great great grandparents as you.

Its confusing, but if you put int on paper and make a family tree, it becomes easy to figure out.

  3. yes... its ok... we are all distant relatives in the end aren't we?

  4. well, actually... it might be okay because of the fact, at some point in the world chain, were all related. And third cousin's once removed don't really count if you want to date. People who count are cousins, parents, siblings, etc.

    Hope this was helpful.

    Good Luck;)
