Is it ok to delete old updates from computer ?

ive been trying get more space on my c drive so i was told to delete old updates from the -add/remove program- screen

You were told wrong. You should never delete old windows updates for your computer. if you do your computer will be more vulnerable to attacks over the internet.

If you want to get more space... you should look at removing programs that you do not use very much .

no, dont do it with windows updates, they are required

No. It is not good to delete Windows Updates. But it is okay to delete old Java updates. Keep the newest though. And the Java Run-time.
