Is it ok to drink Sassafras tea?

I was on the Appalachian Trail and picked up some Sassafras leaves for tea. But I don't know if its safe to pour water onto them and make them tea. Thanks for your answers in advance.

  1. Growing up we made sassafrass tea by boiling roots from the sassafras tree and it was very delicious. It is safe to drink the tea. It taste like root beer. Enjoy


  2. The FDA banned the use of sassafras oil due to liver damage in laboratory animals.

    I am originally from VA, and we used to make sassafras tea.  We used the root of the tree and not the leaves.  Take the outer 'bark' off the root and wash thoroughly.  You will need 3-4 roots that are about 4-6 inches long.  Chop the roots into smaller pieces.  Boil 1 gallon of water, and then drop the pieces of root into the water.  Boil 15-20 minutes or longer if you want stronger tea.  It is really good. We always sweetened it with honey.

    We never made tea from the leaves, but you could by pouring boiling water over them and letting them steep for 20 minutes, then straining out the leaves. You will need to use about 1 tsp of dried leaves to 1 cup water or 2 tsp fresh leaves to 1 cup water.

    Be sure to check with your doctor before drinking sassafras tea as some say it can be used as a blood thinner.  If you are currently on a blood thinner, it could cause adverse effects.

  4. I've seen Pappy's sassafras tea at Kroger. It's sold in bottles of liquid concentrate. It's safrole free and caffeine free.

    The FDA has determined that sassafras has been known to cause cancer in rats. The reason is because of the safrole that is found in the roots and bark of the tree is a carcinogen. We also read that this causes cancer less than what alcohol causes cancer. The FDA banned sassafras tea in 1976.

    Within Sassafras there is a chemical called safrole. Safrole is a very common plant chemical, found in Mace, Nutmeg, basil, black pepper, Rosemary, Dill, Black tea, Dang Gui, Tamarind, Cinnamon, witch hazel, Asian wild ginger, and many other plants.

    Someone did a study demonstrating that this substance was carcinogenic in rats. Dr. James Duke reports that even if this same carcinogenicity were applicable to humans, a cup of sassafras tea would be 1/14 as carcinogenic as a cup of beer. Sassafras has been banned by the FDA as a commercial product, unless it has had the safrole removed.
