Is it ok to give a Dog cat food?

i ran out of dog food, and can't get away to the store. So will it be alright if i give my dog cat food

The major difference between dog and cat food it cat food has taruine in it and dog food does not.  Cats can't produce taruine on their own and dogs can.  There are other difference due different nutritional needs, but for a day or two in a pinch it won't hurt the dog but i would not make a habit out of it.

It's fine.  Growing up our dog only ate cat food as him and the cats shared a food bowl.  He lived to be 17 years old, so it obviously didn't do him an harm.

Short term - as in a day or two - it isn't likely to hurt.  Long term, it's an unbalanced diet for them, especially due to the higher calorie content.

Honestly i dont know.

I do know that my grandma had a dog, and he always got into the cat food and ate a lot of it.

And the dog lived to be 14 years old.

But, im not sure what could happen or if its bad though.

Just a little but don't let him have it on a regular basis. I just asked a question similar to it and the last answerer told me too much could cause Kidney Failure/Problems. So its ok to feed him a TINY bit only once but after that you should stop. Substitute his dog food with Lamb/chicken/beef & rice. We fed it to our elderly dog Sadie and she loved it but unfortunately about a year ago she had a stroke and we put her down. She was 14-15 years of age.

No, cat food is made for cats. Just make some rice and chicken and give him that until you can get some dog food.

it is ok to give your dog catfood but dont keep doing it because he needs the vitamins from his food to stay healthy

I'm sure it is until you get more, but he may not want dogfood after that. Catfood tastes better to them almost every time. More flavor.

It should be alright as long as you dont do it for a long term thing! Because catfood is for cats and has special vitamins and minerals meant for cats, not dogs.... :] but good luck!

Nope, cat food has different protein/fat levels, and also different vitamins and minerals than dog food.

Your dog will be fine a day without food (it's not cruel, it's what vets will typically recommend for diarrhea to see if it clears itself up, dogs in the wild wouldn't eat every day anyway). If you can't stand to not feed it, feed your dog a bland diet until you can get to the store. Boiled rice and chicken.

no dats really wrong...well the best thing i can advise you to do is to give your dog food left overs from the table dinner...dat will b much better then giving him cat food...

You really shouldn't. Cat food is alot higher in fat so it can be a bad idea for your dogs diet.

Cat food is full of protein that dogs don't need.

i wouldnt suggest it.. cat food is designed to keep cats helathy.. cat food has a very high amount of protein and fats and dog food does not... but if its just for the day your doggy will be fine with no food until you get home.. =D

he might also get diarrhea

its okay im a vet assstant and ive even had to give my dog cat food for a couple of days. its not a balanced diet but he was ok. its not like hes going to die. dont listen to anyone saying its wrong im a ceritfied vet. assistant i know alot more then they do

not for long term diets. Cat food is high in taurine and ash and dogs do not need high levels of this mineral.

Dog's love cat food, and im sure it would be perfectly alright.

I've seen several dogs eating cat food with no problem. :)

although i definitely would recommend that you switch your dog back to dog food as soon as possible. there are certain vitamins and minerals that are in cat food that dogs don't need, and certain minerals that aren't in cat food that dogs DO need.

cat food is not dog food for a reason, because its only for cats.

thus, no don't give your dog cat food, find a different store for your dog food.
