Question:

Is it ok to give my 10 day old son formula and breast milk?

I try to breastfeed my son during the day as much as I can but there are times that he seems like he does not get full at all so I give him an extra 2-4 oz of formula but then I go to breastfeeding on the next time that he is hungry. I give him his last feeding at night from breast milk and then when he wakes up I give him formula. Is this ok to do. I would like to breastfeed him for at least three months but I am scared that this will dry up my milk or he won't take it anymore. Any advice??

  1. I gave my son breast milk that was pumped and formula for the first month and a half, before he was just on formula. He was fine with this. I do know though, that if you don't breastfeed or pump often, your milk supply will slowly dry up. If you plan on giving breast milk for 3 months, make sure you are pumping to help keep your supply!

  2. That is fine to supplement with formula as long as the baby is getting even a little of the breast milk he is still getting the benefits from it. Some mothers supply just is not as great as the demand and you can't let you little guy go hungry. Try using a breast pump every 2 hours that will help build up you milk.

  3. It's okay to supplement...I do.  However, you should ALWAYS offer the breast first at EVERY feeding.

  4. Yes you can, i used to do this, you can mix formula and breast milk together, def do both. yo can also breastfeed for a few min then after give formula right away so this way it wont dry up because ur always breastfeeding,

  5. Exclusive breastfeeding offers health benefits that mixed breast and formula feeding does not, so why do this? If you are nursing on demand you are making as much milk as your baby needs.

  6. it shouldnt dry up your milk if you dont  supplement with formula often. I did it with mine and am still breastfeeding at 12 months

  7. Stop giving formula. The more formula you give the less stimulation your body gets to make milk. A 10 day old baby should be eating every 1-2 hours. As long as he is getting 6 wet diapers a day he is getting plenty to eat and the formula isn't needed.
