Question:

Is it ok to go only to a wedding ceremony and skip the reception if it's at the same location?

A friend (not a close one) is getting married tonight at 8 PM, and there will be a small reception afterward outside the church. I am going on a trip tomorrow and want to get a good night's sleep first. I don't think she'll miss me at the reception at all. Would there be any problem with me skipping out right after the ceremony?

  1. Yes, etiquette does not require that you go at all.  Only that you tell your hostess of you plans first.  There is no need to give an explanation.

  2. I've done it before.

  3. I'm sure she will understand if you tell her the truth. Let her know you won't be attending the reception.  Let her know in advance so she need not cater food for you.

  4. Well this answer is too late, but you should let her know ahead of time that you will not be attending the reception.  Most likely she'll have to pay for your meal (the deadline for final count and payment in full is usually like a whole week before the wedding).
