Question:

Is it ok to have the bi orb light on for coldwater fish?

The reason I ask is i have just got fantail fish and i felt the top while the lamp was on and it gets quite warm i dont want to damage the fish.

  1. It's better to have fluorescent lighting for goldfish since it doesn't get as hot. I'm not sure what exactly the Biorb light is.. But if it's getting really hot, then I wouldn't use it. If it's just slightly warm, it should be alright.

    I used regular light bulbs [aquarium safe] in my old tank and it heated the water but even then, the water stayed no higher than 73 degrees [F].

    If the water doesn't go any higher than that with the light, it should be alright =]


  2. Cold water fish require (obviously) far less light and heat then tropical fish... but you knew that. Be aware that heat will upset cold water fish as in general in the wild there natural temp of water doesn't averagely ever feel anything but cold.

    By all means have the light on for a few hours a day for display purposes that is fine and healthy for the fish... but anything over you risk upsetting the fish and making them prone to white spot ( a stress related disease).
