Is it ok to hold my puppy like a baby??

i really like to hold my puppy like a baby, you know with her leg facing up... and the vet told me that it will shorten her life... he said that it will make her die faster.. is it true?? she also like to sleep like a baby... im afraid now....

okay ive seen many ppl hold a dog like that. it makes no sense how it will die faster.... but they don't like to be held like that a lot.and my dog sleeps on its back too. so don't worry and shes 8 now.

my dog is the same way it will be fine that is just like if you were to sleep on your side it will be fine!!!!!!

you shouldn't hold your dog like this. It could damage her spine and may cause her an injury. If she sleeps like that on the floor or in her bed then let her, its Ok for her to sleep on her back.But its bad to pick her up and hold her like a baby. For one thing, she is a dog, not a child aand another.. it may cause difficulties with her spine. It's not going to kill her or aything but its not exactly healthy.

Your vet is an idiot. That is not true at all. Sometimes my dogs sleep on their backs & even want to be held that way so I can rub their bellies. If your dog doesn't wiggle & try to get out of being held that way, then it's perfectly fine. But if your dog resists, you should let it down and hold it another way.

um i've never heard of that! but a puppy is not a baby, its a puppy. and most pups that i know of do not like to be held this way, puppies have natural righting reflex they are born with. meaning if held upside down otr tipped over, they will try to right themselves.so if it struggles or whines, then stop holding it like that, they dont like it.

Oh come on, use your brain, get a new vet, and hold your dog like a baby if you want.

That's fine.  I did it with my pup until she was too heavy to hold anymore.

I've never heard of that myself and I hold my dogs like that all the time plus my Lhasa Apso sleeps like that all spread eagle on his back.  

There are some breeds though pug nosed ones that don't do very well on there backs because the can't breathe very well.

I don't see anything wrong with holding your dog like a baby.  Some dogs will not allow you to place them on their backs because they are type A dogs.  Independent & strong temperamented, an Alpha type dog.

Placing a puppy on its back is one of the tests that are preformed on pups to test their temperament.  If they allow you to place them on their backs & they stay still you have a mellow pup but if the pup fights this & will not settle down he is going to be a donimant dog.
