Question:

Is it ok to just keep practicing my guitar PRIVATELY rather than openly? Coz Islam bans open music?

The Qu'ran and Hadith forbid music (after studying this I know this for definate) and they give a reason for it: corruption/misguidance. The reason is basically openness. So if I be private about it and just practice once a day to myself as usual, is that ok? Will Allah accept that? You see, I'm a possible revert...

peace =)

  1. Prophet Mohammad SAW  said that Music makes man lazy.  Music also makes us waste our time.

I believe music is only OK to me if it relaxes my soul and makes me feel good. I like only the music that is light in sound and makes me feel peaceful. I listen very little music. Most western music is extremely noisy and thriller of soul instead of making it relaxed. For this reason I never feel good listening western music.

  2. Yeah, no probs.

This is because 'there is no compulsion in religion'. And that's written in the Qur'an mate. What bigger authority do you want? Listen, it's your own choice. You know the rules. Follow or not.

    Sports aren't haram LOL!

And BTW, there's many Muslim nasheed singers who do good in Allah (SWT)'s cause. No worries

  3. Masha'Allah you seem like n intelligent person! Indeed it is all about sacrifices you have indeed taken a step into the light, I would advise you at this point to not worry too much about if you can play your guitar or not, it will all fit into place once you start implementing Islam into your life daily. Best of luck! :)

Nope they are not but come on what is so good about men running around in shorts chasing crazily after ONE ball......? LOL :P

EDIT: well since you have analysed then I'm sure you are well aware of the issue about Music etc, but I seriously would advise you this issue is mi-nute  the greater issue is you wanting to embrace Islam as a way of life.

Edit: I am not understanding what you mean, clarify....?

  4. LOL, sports are not haram...

(music)Yes it is forbid, because it enjoins evil. It can deprive you of performing prayers, worshipping Allah and remembrance of Allah.

    That's why its forbidden.

So its best you leave it. (Overtime, with patience:)

Even if you do it openly, or privately, it affects you, either good or bad. And mostly its bad.

    -------------

And also knowing that music is forbidden, then still doing it, is bad enough already..

:/ It takes time, but try to find habits that benefits(for hereafter) for you, rather than something that doesn't..

May Allah guide you to the straight path.

  5. any thing you do which makes you forget your Salat is not a good deed. that doesnt mean music is haram or playing musical instrument is haram,if one is too busy with his/her kids and forget to pray salat, does it mean having children is haram !

or if you are too busy in cooking, does it mean cooking is haram ?

just dont forget to remember Allah Allmighty..

Prophet Sulaiman forgot to pray salat ul wusta..does it mean Prophet Suleiman was stripped from his Prophet hood !

no where in Glorious Quran it is mentioned Music or playing musical instrument is haram !

this is a fabrication, found in hadith books..beware of such books

  6. If you believe that music is forbidden, but still do it in private, you might be hiding it from other people but you can not hide it from Allah. Allah knows all and sees all. I know it is hard, this is a test for you. There was a British singer in the 70s called Cat Stevens. He gave up his musical career when he became Muslim. He was very fameous. You have to decide what is more important, this life or the Next Life.

  7. It's great that u accept the prohibition of music, which even many Muslims don't. It's not only haram to listen to it in public, but in private too. Actually, it's going to affect u, first of all if u listen to it. It's effects on the society come later.

Generally speaking, music is deemed to be har'am due to its effects on a person’s soul and the possible effects on morals. It is also very addictive and can lead to a person indulging in vain things which can make him lose his purpose in life. It actually effects the subconscious mind, so you're unaware of how it is effecting you.

Music sows hypocrisy in the heart like water causes seeds to grow inside soil. It's simply going to damage ur sincere relationships. U must have seen in the newspapers how these popular musical celebrities keep having troubles with their relations (families, friends, spouses). These r the people with the highest divorce rates, tell lies all the time and have no morals. So music can never be passed as lawful on the basis of Shariah. It's the voice of Satan.

I can tell u from personal experience that it makes the Quranic recitation boring and troublesome for u. I have memorized the Quran, but when I got into bad company and began listening to music, I also neglected the Quran, since I never felt like reading it. Made me forget some of the parts. Thanks God, I realized that soon, and repented.

I understand that it's ur talent. See, tambourine (duff) isn't prohibited, since Muhammad (P.B.U.H) allowed it's use since:

It was narrated that `A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) attended a wedding of one of her female relatives from the Ansar (Muslims of Madinah), and then the Prophet (peace and blessings be on him) asked her, "Have you sent a girl with her [the bride] who can sing and beat the duff [tambourine]?" `A'ishah then said, "What would she say?" The Prophet said, "She can say, 'Here we come; to you we come; greet us as we greet you.''

Why don't u try out ur skills with that, like the Nasheed singers, Zain Bhika, Dawood Wharnsby, Ahmad bukhatir, and others? They sing really nice and popular songs.

And yeah! u can have the sweetest music in Paradise. It won't have any harmful effects either :)

  8. If allah bans music then that's it!!! music is evil and you'll be killed by other jihadists of islam to protect their fragile faith!

    Duh.

Who/what could ban music? (Sorry but that doesn't even compute)

  9. I love playing my guitar. And I can understand what you are saying. Before I reverted I played all the time, now not so much becuase my priorities are different but all the same, I do love it. Thinking of getting a new guitar soon. Certain Music is distracting for me, but guitar aint so that's why I still play. If it ever became distracting I would cut down, like I did.

Islam is in the intention, keep that in mind.

  10. Sports are not Haram. I am an Alto Sax player, and know what you go through. I only practice my sax in private, or with other sax players. Rarely do I preform in front of a public audience. If I do, it is ok because I am simply playing for them, there is no singing and dancing involved. If you do become Muslim, you can continue playing your guitar on a daily basis. You can even play it in front of public audiences. Just make sure it doesn't bring about singing and dancing.

    Hope this helps.

  11. yeah i can't abandon my guitar either...........i dont know how good you are but i suck..........i will keep practice till i get better......but i am taking it easy rite now.

  12. yeah sure
