I have a SUV which is prescribed 87 octane gasoline, however, i feel sometimes it is underpowered and i feel the under power goes away when i mix hi-octane about 25%. I am not sure how badly it affects my engine.

  1. Yes you can mix them.  The high octane gasoline is exactly the same gasoline as regular (87) gas except with some octane boosting additives.

    BUT !!!!!

Octane does NOT measure energy content, quality, detergent, power, etc.  It measure absolutely NOTHING other than resistance to self ignition (from high compression engines like turbos).

So if you put in more than what is recommended you are really wasting your money.

If you really want to do your engine some good, add a bottle (can) of fuel injector cleaners few times a year.  That really helps with clogged injectors, mpg, emission.

    Good Luck...

  2. well mixing fuels is always a chance.

try adding a little more hi octane to the mixture, maybe about 40%

  3. if your SUV is suppose to have 87 octane dont use the 89 or 91.  By some fuel injector you put right into the tank after a fill up. Will clean your engine and get rid of water

  4. it depends if your car is Fuel injected and has knock sensors which will adjust the cars performance according to the fuel. generally putting a 89 or 91 octane fuel wont damage a modern engine. The standard fuel in Australia is 91 octane and we have a large number of identical cars to the US. One thing not to put in your car is fuel mixed with ethanol, whilst cheaper it gives you less mileage and can potentially damage your engine in the long run. I put 98 octane in my car for years and i can really feel the difference and it has caused no problems.
