I read that you can put regular thin tissue paper in it's cage, but I was wondering if the dye would hurt the poor little fella.

  1. Most colors (pigments) are extracted from nature and in most cases safe for animals.

  2. since hamsters are nibblers, if they eat to much of ANY litter, it would be toxic but if the dyes are used it could become toxic much faster. If you really want colored dye do your research, i used colored litter for my mouse mixed w/ normal litter so that she can get used to it. I use a brand that says the dye is natural, can be used for rodents, and is safe. So the dye does bring along some natural risks so do ur research and you will be fine.

  3. Some dyes are toxic and may harm the little critter.

So i rather be safe than sorry.

  4. NEVER NEVER use colored tissues in your hammies cage. Hammies are very sensitive and the dye can cause itching and flaking of their fur. Also hamsters sometimes gnaw tissues and the dye can prove bad for their little stomachs. The best tissues to be used are toilet rolls which are unbleached, untreated and non fragrant. Most hamsters love toilet paper for their bedding. Put in a whole roll of toilet paper and watch them have fun ripping them off and prepare their nests as well as use the toilet roll tube for their games. Regular tissues can also be used provided they are again unbleached, untreated without any colours or fragrances.
