  1. NO!

Read the section in your Owner's Manual on how to care for your camera and lens.

  2. Very good question, very deep. My answer is 1st thing you do is sit back on the couch, drink a lot of alcohol, and make people guess if you still have on your contacts, it's a lot like playing quarters, anyone with the wrong answer has to drink up. When finished, you won't even remember you wear contacts.

  3. the lens is also similar to our eyes. now, try cleaning your eyes with alcohol.

record yourself screaming in pain. then play it again everytime you are curious about putting some alcohol on your lens.

disclaimer: if you tried cleaning your eyes with alcohol and resulted permanent damage, we did not have this conversation.

p.s. buy something proper to clean your lens because they are investments and usually lasts longer than your camera body.

  4. No, not only does alcohol miss most of the dirt and smudging on the surface of the lens, but it can damage the multi-coating and actually if used too liberally, attack the adhesive that holds the lens elements within the lens barrel.

  5. Usually the special coating on lenses doesn't like the alcohol in cleaners; use a non-alcoholic cleaner which is much more gentle on the coatings. I used some once on my old Nikon 601AF camera; it ruined the lens coating. Oops. :-/
