  1. waiters make alot of money but take alot of c**p at the same time!

  2. I owned a couple of restaurants, and worked in others.  Most of the disparaging comments were "If you would have stayed in college..." or "I thought you went to college..." etc...  They didn't realize that I WANTED to be in those jobs.  I take great pride in the hospitality industry.  I just chalked it up to them being jerks.  They do see it as a lowly job and that you could be doing something "better", whatever that means.

  3. I'm fine with waiters unless they try to wait on a customer at the counter. The NUMBER ONE, MOST IMPORTANT RULE in operating a restaurant is this: NEVER PUT A WAITER ON COUNTER.

On the rare occasion when I sit a the counter and a waiter tries to wait on me, I leave . . . and generally never return.

If they stick to tables and booths, however, I treat them well and tip them as well as I'd tip a waitress . . . which is very well!

  4. I worked as a server for a long time -- especially when I was in school because the hours were flexible, and I could get cash fast!

It definitely depends on the type of person that doesn't respect the one serving their food.  It's not that they're just jerks... I think a lot of it is that they have NO idea what servers do!  I have friends that never worked in the service industry before that were completely shocked that my paychecks were always only a couple of bucks, and that my entire income was dependent on their tips.

A lot of them didn't think to weigh in certain factors as well, such as: the night of the week vs the number of people on staff --- the idiot cook ruining all the server's orders --- the jerk of a boss that's treating the server like c**p --- the other servers not doing their jobs --- carrying heavy-*** trays --- having to buss your own tables 'cause the buss-boy called in sick, etc....... all the things that might hinder a server's job and/or tip.

So really -- I think it's all a lack of knowledge.  I think if everyone worked just one week as a server they'd be whistling a different tune, and hopefully leaving a better tip.

  5. I'm working as a "chef de rang" in a high class restaurant, and i can assure you that being a waiter here in gastronomic Belgium asks a lot of knowledge ( wine, digestives, food ).

so not everybody can be waiter here...

the next step for an excellent "chef de rang" is "maître d'hotel"

and then you can gain up to 3000 euros / month

i don't know how much us dollars that makes exactly ?! but i can assure you that it makes you a respectable "professional"

  6. Of course it's okay. Who doesn't respect waiters...?

I own restaurants and our customers LOVE our waiters.

  7. I worked at a restaurant when I was a teenager for over 4 years, and I was made to wait on tables also.  I hated it because of the lack of respect from many people. . . The only way a guy is going to make it as a waiter is to work at a 4 or 5 star place :)

  8. A lot of people don't respect waiter because they consider it a low class job, I guess. A job of serving others. However, waiter's can make a ton of money if they go the the right resturants.I  know people who make over $200 a night. Thats not ever a full day's worth of work. Who cares about respect when you can pay the bills and have fun. Its potenitally one of the best paying jobs without a college educations.
