  1. Ask if you're allowed to, if they don't mind, then by all means you should go. You could add so much tenderness to the last years of those folks lives.

  2. yes. even though you dont work there, you can still visit. i'm sure the residents appreciate any visitation time they get.

  3. Absolutely! What's more, the residents I'm sure will love to see you. The decision as to whom the residents have visit them is still entirely up to them, they are no less human than you or I and therefore enjoy all of the same rights and freedoms that we would in the same type of setting! Even if you left on not the best of terms with the staff that has nothing at all to do with the individual residents and should not prevent you from visiting! It is so nice to see that there are people who do really care for their patients!

  4. yes, you should be able to visit them as friends. usually nursing homes dont care about visitors, especially if you worked there.

  5. I see nothing wrong if you have forged some bonds between these poor people.  Friendships transcend all other relationships and should not be effected just because you no longer work there.  You may be all that they have left.

  6. No, it is not, at least not without permission from the nursing home.

Even then, it is unprofessional.  Your job at the nursing home was to provide care and services for the resident that were for the benefit of the resident, not for your benefit.  If you want to visit the resident after you no longer work there, think about this:  Would your visit be primarily for YOUR benefit, or the resident's benefit?  In many cases, visiting the resident after you no longer work there would make them sad and lonely because they'd be reminded that they don't get to see you every day anymore.

I own a non-medical home care business in northern San Diego County called A Servant's Heart Senior Care at http://www.trustworthycare.com and at our company we have a strict policy against such visits after services end for a client unless the COMPANY receives permission from the family of the client for such visits.

  7. It is  my  understanding  the  residence  have  same rights  as  if in their  own  home  for  a  visitor.  If they dont  want  one they dont have to see them  and  staff cant  stop a  visitor..  However  if  former  employee was  dismissed  for  a  reason  that  concerns  safety, drugs, stealing  abuse,   I presume  that rule  would  be  over rid  for  protection  of  clients  which is  the  obligation of the  home.  But  Im  sure they  would  enjoy  seeing  a  famlair  face  and talk as  many do  come  and  go at  homes.  *mamatx

  8. As long as you left the nursing home on good terms, I don't see why not. If you work with youth, disabilities or the homeless there are different boundaries that apply. In those areas, they may see your friendship as meaning more and that's when you need to be careful.

It would be different if you worked for a Home Care agency because it wouldn't be right for you to visit them in their own homes. Nursing homes have security measures in place if something doesn't seem right.

These residents have asked you to visit them and they have the right to do that. By all means go for it and good on you for being a true friend.

  9. No.  It is not professional.  Only if the ex-employee left on good terms and is no longer employed in the same industry would it be considered appropriate.  Even then it should first be cleared by the management.
