  1. You can leave it running 24/7 indefinitely. This is exactly what people do when they configure a computer as a server (mail server, database server, file server, web server, application server, ...). These computers are only ever rebooted after (routine) maintenance.

If it's just for a few days, simply turn off the monitor and any other devices you're not using to conserve power and unplug scanners, printers, and anything with a brick. Do not use sleep mode if you're not sure what it does - this may prevent software from running & recording the camera input. To be on the safe side, disable automatic screen saver/ sleep mode settings and any automatic updates or scheduled events.

If this is intended as a permanent setup however, buy or build a dedicated machine that you can strip down to cut power consumption. It should be possible to make a server that requires between 30 and 100 Watts, depending on performance requirements.

  2. Most nights I just turn off my monitor and leave the computer on. Do look into your power options, not sure which ones will save you power but still allow you to record.

If it is on all the time, you have more chance of "nasties" - make sure your security is strong (firewall, virus protection etc).
