Question:

Is it okay that I want to?

Take public transportation to my college instead of driving everyday, in order to save money, keep the car up, and give myself a break from driving. My parents gave me no choice so I have to live at home and commute 20 miles everyday, they think that taking public transportation (the train and the bus) is dangerous; they don't want me to take public transportation but I don't have any thing against it. What's so wrong with public transportation and do they have the right to tell me that I can't take it? Thanks. Also how many days should I drive verses how many days should I park and ride.

  1. No. Tell your parents there is a cute guy of an opposite race than yours who you give rides to in their car. They will be furious and demand you take the bus, which is alot safer i hear.

  2. Depends where you live I would think, is it a high crime area?On campus parking permits can be pretty expensive.Make a list of the pros and cons and talk it over with your parents. Remember they have your best interests at heart and they know best.

  3. You are an adult and free to make your own decisions. If they are paying for your education and you do not have a job or enough money to live on your own then they have the right to keep you at home and you should follow the house rules to respect their home but, they do not have the right to tell you how to get around unless they are going to drive you every day, provide the vehicle and gas, or as you said move you close enough to school for it to be convenient to drive! Good luck.

  4. If you're old enough to be in college, you're old enough to plan your own transportation.  Public transportation makes a lot of sense for many reasons - it saves money and helps the environment.  Depending on where you live, your parents might have some valid concerns; show them that you are aware of the risks and explain how you will take care of yourself.  Point out that driving is statistically riskeir - far more people get injured or killed driving cars than on trains or buses. You could also calculate the cost of driving, including maintenance, repairs, parking, and insurance - I'm pretty sure you'll be able to show them that public transport is cheaper.

  5. Unless you live in a high-crime area (or perhaps if you're coming home very late), public transportation is substantially safer than driving (not to mention cheaper in an age of high gas prices, and more environmentally friendly in any age).

If you're in college, presumably you're over 18, which means you have the legal right to live wherever you want and make your own choices (and pay for the privilege).  If you do choose to live at home, then your parents may set conditions in exchange for your being allowed to stay there.  Unless you live somewhere particularly dangerous, this particular condition doesn't sound very reasonable.  Perhaps point out to them some auto accident statistics (particularly those for young drivers).

  6. Tell your parents your not safe even on the college campus.  Havent they heard of shootings  etc....???

You never really safe any where in else your own home and still people can get in.

Tell your parents you old enough to make your own choices and this way you save money.

  7. I take public transportation to my college also. I'd say for the same reasons, plus it's faster than driving for me (there's always traffic). I get a free transit pass through my school for the public transportation so it is very much cheaper and I take it everyday I have school instead of driving. My mom isn't the one that's concerned, but my fiance is also claiming that it's dangerous. No one has the right not to tell you to take it, it's ultimately your choice. I've seen some pretty interesting people, heard the stories on the news and seen some first hand, but it doesn't scare me any. I also have nothing against public transportation except that it's late sometimes. I also carry mace with me, but in the 6 years I've been taking public transit, I've never had to use it. I think it's better to take it during the day because at night people tend to find it easier to get away with things. Being aware of the people around you is important.  I'd say it's alright until you feel unsafe.

  8. Take public transportation if you are attending morning to afternoon classes.  Use the car if you are attending night classes.  You might want to take public transportation during the winter because the roads get slippery and chances of getting into an accidents are higher with the snow.  Sometimes the winter gets so cold that you can't even start the car.  So that's something to think about.

You would be doing the environment and your wallet a big favor by using public transportation.  If you really have to use the car I would find a friend at the school and car pool.

Car accidents happen everyday.  Not train crashes.  People aren't getting pushed into train railseveryday.  But sixteen wheelers get overturned on the road every week.

  9. This sounds like something you might need to discuss with your parents, because they are the people you will have to deal with if they get upset.  I do not see the problem depending on where you live.
