Question:

Is it okay that my son uses a soft spouted sippy instead of a hard one?

He's almost 11 months and has simply gotten used to this type (gerber's nuk brand) of sippy. I've tried a few times to see if he would use the other types (in many different brands), but he seems to only like "his" sippy. Will I run into any problems in the future by him not using a sippy w/ the traditional hard spout?

  1. It is alright for now for him to use the soft spouted sippy cup, but later in his life (around a year or two before he goes to kindergarden) try to get him away from the soft spouted sippys and into hard. He will not want to drink from water bottles or any normal cups and that will become a large problem later in his life.

  2. I don't see anything wrong with that at all.  I think if I were a child and had a choice the soft spout sounds much nicer then the hard one!  Personally, by the time a child is 2 he should start drinking out of a regular cup.  They have the coordination by then.  By the time a child is 3 he should be completely off the sippy cup.  I think it's a pity that parents let their children drink out of sippy cups when they are older then that.

  3. For now, you're okay. But as he grows older, start giving him the hard spouted sippy. If he refuses to use it, he gets nothing, and if he does use it, he's praised and rewarded.

  4. no he is 11 months old..do you know any five year olds that dont drink out of a cup? that are normal developmentally wise? dont worry so much let him have the spout he likes

  5. Nothing wrong as long as he doesn't bite and swallow bits and pieces of rubber.

  6. Well, heres the only problem, I have about 8 different kinds of sippy cups in my home ranging from sponge bob to mickey mouse and my son will literally throw these cups across the room if I try to give them to him. He would only use the Nuby soft spout one but as he grew more teeth would bite n chew until it was a guaranteed spill cup! FINALLY I got him to use the playtex cheapy cups (go figure) no fancy pictures, small spout...2 in a pack for $4-5 at target..sigh..what are ya gonna do? Best of luck to you!

  7. It is very possible. His soft sippy may in the long run lead to other problems like sucking thumbs which can make your son have bucked teeth witch in turn can make you have to spend thousands on braces. Decide for yourself.

  8. who cares about that
