I'm taking care of a place - the owner are gone for the summer. They didn't turn off the water because their plants (outside ones) are on a drip system (timer). When I check the place every other day or so, I flush the toilets.

  1. One thing is... the water can get crummy and stain the bowl over time (still cleanable); but if you put mineral oil in the water, it will float and prevent it from evaporating---this oil will not go rancid quickly as would other oils and smell----and doubly keeps out the air which will keep bacteria growth/muckyness to a minimum in the water.  ALso close the lid.

  2. Keep doing what you're doing.  The people will thank you.

Even if it doesn't do any damage to the sewage lines, lack of water WILL allow internal tank parts to rust and/or dry out, and will need to be replaced sooner.

So just give them a flush and life goes on.

  3. you do not want the water to evaporate. The water in the s bend is what keeps sewer gas from escaping
