Is it okay to buy a lovebird after 12 weeks?

I'm getting a lovebird. Currently, the place where I'm getting him/her from has two 3-4 month old lovies. They will be getting new ones by the end of the summer, but then they have to wean them off their handfed formulas, etc., and I don't want to wait that long.

My question is: will I have a better chance of bonding with a younger bird, or should I get him now?

  1. If they are under 6 months old you are fine. I've seen many in pet stores that are obviously over 6 months old ( you  can tell by their coloring....at around 5 months old the peach face lovebirds start to have the pinkish feathers on their foreheads change to red often giving a dotted look to this area while it is changing--at maturity they are red and that is usually around 6 months old).

I've tamed down older lovebirds, but it is not as easy to bond with them after a year or two. At 3-4 months they are still babies and if they were handfed you should have yourself a beautiful and loving pet.

  2. A 3-4 month old lovebird will be fine.  Were they handfed though?  You may need to handle them and decide which one is the right one for you.
