I just thought that because supermarkets don't specialise in it it might not be okay for my pets to eat. (I mean stuff like Tesco pet food that they manufactured themself)

  1. Its fine, it is people opinion you cant say it is good or bad.

my dog used to have food from pet shop and stuff like that he used to be so expensive to keep.

We spent more money on him then us and there are 9 people living in my house.

But now we get my dog food from cosco (warehouse) we buy a big bag of biscuits for less then £10, we started this when I got my cats.

Yes my cats eat the same food it doesn’t bother then my dog decided he didn’t like to be singled out at mill time. They do still have meat in the mornings and then there biscuits at night.

    And they love it !!

Hope this helps you make up your mind as it is your opinion.

  2. the best place to buy your pet food is actually at a livestock feed store.. its usually cheaper

by a large bag - it will  be less than a small one and last you forever.

they usually sell this at the counter along with chicken feed etc.. the big bunny food bags are in storage and they get them for you - they are not on the shelves.. check it out...

even cat food is better priced there

  3. it's fine. i buy my guinea pig food from tesco and my piggy doesn't seem to care one little bit.

  4. its better to stay with the same food you feed your pets than to switch around, or your pet will have diarrhea.

  5. Tesco don't manufacture their own petfood, there are a few big factories that make dog food and Tesco buy it in. I give my dogs dried Madra from Tesco, big 10kg bag is about 9 Euro. They are happy and healthy. They used to have the big sacks of Lidl dog food until Lidl started putting in in smaller bags and charging nearly the same price.

Vets/pet superstores charge way higher prices and there is no guarantee the food is any better quality.

  6. People have been buying pet food from the supermarket for years it costs more at the pet stores and the supermarket brands are perfectly ok for your pet.

  7. it's fine for my dogs, and pretty much every other families dogs that i know. I'd say that it is perfectly ok to buy your pet food from a supermarket just like everyone else in britain!

  8. Its absolutly fine to buy pet food from supermarkets like sainsbury's nd tesco's and places like that but if your really really worried and don't wan't to take the risk you can just go to a pet shop hope i helped

  9. whether its fine or not depends on your opinion for a start canned food for dogs is 75% water also you get all the horrible bits of the animal in it, i feed my dog a bakers dry mix and he loves it =] it has more protein and more of what he needs than cans do. I would also recommend james wellbeloved its great for sensitive stomachs

    hope this helps =)

  10. Most supermarkets don't carry high-quality (or healthy!) pet food.

Depending on the animal and the store, you may or may not be able to find good food there.

The cat and dog food sold in supermarkets is usually the lowest of the low. It's cheap, but it's full of fillers and uses low-quality ingredients. Poor quality cat foods, for example, don't have as much meat in them as the healthier foods. Bad dog foods are full of things like wheat and corn, neither of which really have a place in a dog's diet. The food at specialty pet stores is more expensive because it's better quality. You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on pet food, but you should aim for the highest quality you can afford. It's more expensive, but you'll have to feed less of it and you can avoid some health problems.

With small animals, the food sold in supermarkets is usually pretty bad, too. Guinea pigs, for example, should get plain timothy-based pellets. Most supermarket guinea pig food is either made with seeds or alfalfa, which are not adequate diets for a guinea pig. Same with rabbits. You do NOT want to feed them food mixes with seeds, dried fruits, or colored crunchies. Just plain timothy pellets, which are more expensive but the only acceptable diet.

If you want to save money, you can buy in bulk online. For guinea pig food, it's a lot cheaper to buy a 50 pound bag from Oxbow than it is to buy a smaller bag from the pet shop.

Feed stores often are cheaper, but you still need to make sure it's high quality food. I can get a whole bale of timothy hay from a feed store for the price of one of the small bags they sell in pet stores for rabbits. Some feed stores carry high quality foods, others don't.

So, bottom line is, know what your pet's nutritional requirements are and know what foods are the best for them.

What sort of pets do you have?

  11. I hope so, as I buy my boy's food from Aldi. He's healthy, and lively, so I assume he's thriving on it.I feed him a couple of cans of sardines in tomato sauce, twice a week.18p a can from Asda. His coat, joints, and eyes benefit from the fish oils.

  12. it is fine now

  13. yeah it's fine

millions of people buy the pet food at a supermarket every day, and their pets are healthy. everything from ultra-cheap (like Smartprice) to the 'luxury' food (in a tin? luxury?!).

it's funny when you see people with smartprice human food and whiskas..etc for the cat. :)

  14. It's fine we buy our hamster food from a supermarket and they both seem happy and healthy with it.

  15. Yeah, its fine, all pet foods have to pass a qualified pet standard to be sold here in Britain anyways

  16. I would imagine it would be fine - a lot of supermarket own brands are made by the leading manufacturers anyway, so can't see why not.
