Every once in a while I have to give my dog Benadryl for his very very bad separation anxiety when my boyfriend and I have to leave for like 5 or 6 hours. The vet said it was fine and I give my furry baby the correct dosage and everything but I'm wondering if it's okay to give him the generic Benadryl instead of the name brand kind. I'm going to go buy his medicine in the next couple of days and was just curious.

  1. Yes,as long as it is diphenhydramine,it's OK. I buy Equate Brand from Wal * Mart and it works just fine

  2. you mean store brand? like walgreens brand, etc? yes it's perfectly fine, it's what my mom buys, and she's a pharmacist, she knows it's exactly the same.

  3. Just check the labels and make sure it's the same ingredients.

  4. Yea, it's fine, just make sure to check the active ingredient in the generic to see if it's the same as the one in benadryl!

  5. Generic brands for all drugs are the same as the named brands, as you know they are a cheaper alternative. As long as the vet says that it is okay it will be fine

  6. most of the generic meds are made by the same companies as the namebrand and usually contain the same ingredients. just compare the packages or ask the pharmacist for their recommendation.

  7. The generic is the same thing as the brand-name.

Do read the label tho and be sure that you are getting the generic equivelant of the same drug..  look at the active ingredient and make sure its the same drug and dosage.
