My tomatoe plants are about 4 feet tall. I was advised to add crushed egg shells soaked overnight in water to add nutrients to my plants. What is the ratio of water to crushed shells. Do I use the water only or should I actually add the soaked eggshells to tomatoe plans?

  1. It's too prevent "blossom end rot"  I never thought about soaking them in water before, it's too put calcium in the soil, go ahead and use the water as well. It's low in this area and my first crop developed it, I usually just stick the shells in the root area. You can buy calcium for plants in most large hardware stores that you mix if you want too play it safe.

  2. Use the water too if the plants could use the wetting.  On the soil that is.

I expect the 'good' that the egg shells (calcium) will do will not be observed until next season, since the calcium will take a while to break down and be in the soil and useful.  I put my egg shells into the compost and they can take months to disappear!  So put the shells down anyway, and that is a help to keep slugs away - they do not like the sharp bits on their tummies!
