Question:

Is it okay to install a curtain rod bracket with nails?

I'm trying to install curtain rod brackets, but because the wall is adjacent to where I am placing the brackets, there is an obstruction that prevents me from either drilling/s******g in further. I'm thinking about using nails instead of screws. Are there any particular disadvantages to substituting nails for screws in this case?

  1. I would recommend against using nails.  I've tried this in my early home-owning days and learned the hard way.  I've learned the nails will pull out in time, causing the curtain rod to fall.  Use some small wall anchors.  They are cheap and do a great job holding up the curtain rods.  All you do is drill a hole in the wall slightly smaller than the diameter of the wall anchor and tap it in with a hammer.  This creates a hole in the wall so you can mount them with screws.  I know you were not looking to use screws, but you won't be sorry if you did.

  2. Bad idea. The weight of the rod will cause the nail to pull out after its worn a short time. Use screws so you get a better bite into the wall.

  3. Nail it.

  4. nails can pull out over time. you may be fine, depending on weight of curtains.
