Is it okay to just have one cockatiel?

I know that there are supposed to be two in a cage, because cockatiels are very sociable birds, but I was wondering if it's okay if I just purchase one cockatiel? How bad is it for the bird if he is the only bird in his cage, or even in the house?

  1. as long as you can spend plenty of time with your bird - making YOU it's best pal, one cockatiel is just fine. It's better to get two if you will not have a lot of time to dedicate to spending with the bird

  2. no it is not bad for thebird. you just need to know that you have to be its one where it gets all its attention from and things. the bird will be ok. and its normal to have one. itsgood. good luck

  3. Oh of course! I have only one cockatiel and I love it! and so does he. We are really bonded. But there is also a lot of people coming in and out all the time (3 sisters and their friends) and everyone loves to take him out, kiss him, play with him etc. and remember if there are two they might bond to each other and not want much to do with you. But I don't know your lifestyle.  good luck...here is a site for more info http://parrotcentral.net/

  4. yes!!!

  5. Yes it is fine if you want to teach your cockatiel tricks they tend to learn better when they aren't side tracked with there mate. Males also learn faster. But if you want to breed then get another. Otherwise you'll have to socialize with it more with only one other wise they are going to have not a good life without a friend.

  6. I would personally only buy one cockatiel.  If you only buy one cockatiel, then make sure that you have the time to devote to your bird.  Cockatiels are in the parrot family and are very smart, and therefore need stimulation.  The only reason to buy two birds is to either mate them, or so that they can play with each other, but if you give your bird attention then they wont need another bird with them.  If you only have one bird that you spend time with then they will think of you as their flock and they will bond more closely with you.  If you wont be able to devote them the time then you should probably get two birds.  Hope this helps!
