Is it okay to put my Parrot outside at night for an hour or two?

I've had my Meyers for 10 years now, but lately, for the past two years, he has been screaming non stop day and night! The vet says he's healthy. He is out of his cage all day (so as long as we are home) gets attention constantly (very spoiled). But he just drives us nuts sometimes at night when we are trying to relax. Is it okay if we put him on the porch (we have an outdoors cage) at night with the light on for about an hour or two? No longer of course!

  1. Absolutely not. I'd never, EVER leave a bird outside for a number of reasons:

    1. That is not how you teach a bird not to scream.

    2. That is a nuisance to your neighbors.

    3. He could freeze to death (remember, these are rainforest birds and are not accustomed to cold climates).

    4. Birds can die of stress. Putting him outside or seeing a predator could literally scare him to death.

There are a million other reasons, including the poor girl below whose tiel got eaten.

You need to remember that your bird probably just hit puberty and they can be a real pain in the *** during that time. Sometimes, it can take a year before they are the loving bird they once were.

Also, you need to work with your bird to change his behavior, not punish him. You should try covering his cage at bedtime and rewarding him for good behavior. Check www.birdtricks.com. Chet Womach is a great trainer and has many tricks to stop birds from screaming.

Good luck and please don't leave your bird outside. You wouldn't do that to your kid, would you?

  2. NO!!!!! DON'T DO IT!!!!! ): ): ): My cockateal got eaten by a Raccoon when she was out side at night!!!!!!!!!! ): ): ): ): ): ): ):

I heard her scream and I ran out as fast as I could,It was

  3. some bird panic at night they get scared a night light could help him hope i helped

  4. I wouldnt leave my bird outside when it is cold- especially when he is 10 years old and not used to it.

Can you put him into a quiet, darkened room at night so he can get some rest?

I make sure to only have one light on in the house at night because otherwise it upsets my birds- they cant sleep and they get grumpy.

When they are getting really loud and obnoxious I will occasionally put them into another room for a time out and they quieten down very quickly.

  5. Many good points have been made in the  other answers you have received so far.  Birds actually need to spend some time outside because natural sunlight is important for them to stay healthy.  Even though your porch seems safe enough in the afternoon and evening hours, my biggest concern about leaving on your porch is mosquitoes biting your bird and giving him  West Nile Virus (WNV).  I have a spare cage that I have completely covered with screen so insects cannot get inside the cage and use it whenever my birds go outside.  If you are sitting right there by the door watching tv I think it is fine to leave him out until dark if:

The cage door is safely secured.

You have screen or mosquito netting completely covering the cage.

Another thing I noticed kept my parrot quiet was setting my 2 quiet parakeets near his cage. My parrot enjoyed watching the parakeets.   Because the parakeets were basically quiet birds they did not encourage his screaming. He  just became more quiet and was entertained by them.   Good luck!
