  1. I never put mine in an aquarium because its not airated. In an aquarium the rats urine can become toxic to there lungs. Although I think that is from not cleaning for a while. I suggest if you want to put your rats in an aquarium get a cage topper for them. But you can also get a cage from a store like petsmart that would be like a guinea pig starter cage and it would be more than enough for 2 rats and the smell wouldnt build up in it because its not encased in glass. Good luck and I hope I helped.

  2. when the rats are babies its ok but when they get older it will become uncomfertable....i had a cage with bars on the sides and top with a plastice bottom about 3" high.... the rats love climbing on the bars.. its also alot easier to clean. I dont think a fish tank would work very well.. srry

  3. well in petco they have one like that but a little wider and not to tall

but i dont no about your cover thing cuz they have to breath

  4. its great. my little sister has a rex rat that LOVES to climg. there are no bars for it to hold onto so its fine. at walmart they had a big fish tank and we got it and there was this plastic that went over the top with a hole for the water bottle. it had holes to breathe too. be sure to put at lest 2 heavy books or your rat WILL escape... believe me

  5. No. Rats should not be placed in tanks. They are not well ventilated and can increase the risk of your rats getting disease. I would reccommend getting a wire cage, like this:

I might be getting rats soon, and I am getting a cage like this:

Get the biggest cage you can afford. Because the bigger the rats get, the smaller the tank will (seem to) get, and the more money you will have to spend buying a new one. Rats need lots of space to stimulate them, or otherwise they can become ill and depressed. You can buy cages that fit on top of glass tanks too, like this:

But these types of cages are more for mice than rats, although you might be able to make it work. Please do your research for the sake of the rats. Hope this helps!

  6. That's what I kept my rats in, and they did just dandy.  The only thing is, you need to be extra sure to keep it clean and in a well-ventilated area, since glass enclosures tend to trap bacteria and the like.  You don't want your ratties ending up with respiratory infections (they're really prone to them).

  7. yes...until u can get a different one. thats what mine was in for a while untill my rabbit and rat got bigger then i moved the rat to my rabbits old cage which had bars on the sides(and my rabbit to a bigger cage). hope i helped!

  8. i agree, you would need to clean ALOT to keep the smell down so they wouldn't get sick because there is not enough ventilation.

you would need to build something pretty awesome to keep them happy as well, they love to climb and most wire cages supply some of that with the wire itself.

go pick up a nice rat or hamster cage and build your rat a nice place to live!

    :D

  9. this will be a good sized cage for two rats, only it needs some shelves to make good use of the hight. not mutch use  even if it is 100 feet high and not usable.

  10. Definitely not. Rats need large, multi-level cages. Aquariums are totally inappropriate and do not have enough ventilation.

  11. yes. aquariums are good for small rodents/pets because they prevent drafts. but the down fall is some times they don't get enough venalation, so make sure that the cover is mesh (like you said) but it's best for it to be longer and wider than tall because then there's more room for the rats to play in instead of heighth, but make sure the cover either has a latch to keep it closed good or put something on it to hold it down so they won't escape! (but make sure if you do put something on it it doesn't block air from coming in!) good luck

  12. Not really.

For a start, you'd be cleaning out daily due to the smell.

Secondly, rats LOVE to climb and need height over width- at least two platforms, not one level.

  13. yes you can put a rat in an aguarium but make sure there is good ventalation and clean it often because bacteria can build up fast.

  14. Noo. :o

Aquariums are the worst type of cages, especially for rats. They love to climb, and like wire cages with lots of levels. Also, they are quite prone to respiratory infections, so a tank would have awful ventilation and make your rats more likely to get them. It would require daily or every-other-day cleaning, rather than weekly to keep them healthy.
