Is it okay to record in 1080i when tv is 720p?

i have a series 3 hd tivo which can record programs in 1080i and my tv is 720p so my question is would it be better to record in 1080i or in 720p or does it not matter?

  1. Yes of course it is ok, you keep the recording which is a better quality, but 720 is great as well to watch.


  2. 720p is broadcast at 60 frames per second, while 1080i is broadcast at 60 fields per second (with two fields per frame, that 1080i broadcast is essentially 30 frames per second)

    If you record at 1080i, but the show is in 720p you are throwing away half the images.

  3. You need to have the same resolutions on both your TV and Tivo for the best picture. It might work without changing anything but most likley that will be because you TV will automaticly adjust to 720P. If you do have any issues you can change your TV to 1080i or your Tivo to 720p.
