Question:

Is it okay to replace a bicycle wheel with a wheel from a different type of bicycle?

I have a Trek bicycle which needs a new tire (rim and all). I want to spend as little money as possible. Is it okay to just measure the diameter and center width and just go pick up a bike w/the same size wheel from a thrift store and put that on it?

  2. Get some help from your boyfriend.

  3. yes, you can use a different brand, just make sure it is the right size.

  4. Yes, this will work like a champ.  As you already realize, you need a wheel with the same rim size and hub width.  For rim size, either look for the actual rim size, as suggested by Anomaly 17, or find a bike with the same size tires.  Nearly all road bikes have the same width hub as do most mountain bikes.  You'll also want to be sure if your bike has quick release wheels, that you find a bike with quick release wheels.

When buying a thrift store bike, you need to check the following:

    1. Rotate the wheel and watch the gap between the brake pad and the rim.  If the wheel is out of true, the gap will narrow and widen as the tire rotates.  1/8 inch of wobble is probably OK.  You don't want a wheel with any more wobble or you'll have to take it to the bike store to be trued.

    2. Make sure the wheel rotates freely.  If there is a lot of drag, the bearings are probably shot or at least need lubrication.

    3. Grasp the tire and see if the wheel has side to side play.  If there is any side to side play, the bearings may be shot or at least need service.

    4. If you are buying a rear wheel, you need to be sure the wheel has the same number of gears in the cassette.  If not, you'll have to take it to the bike store to have your old cassette put on the new wheel, or change the shifters.

BTW - A new wheel isn't really that expensive!  You can buy a high quality, very serviceable new wheel for between $150-200.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Well, yes. If it fits, yes. Have at it.

  6. On the inside of the rim you will see measurements, such as "622 x 18" printed.  On my Trek bike it is right next to where it says Bontrager.  Make sure you find a new wheel with this same number.  The one bad thing about a thrift store wheel is that the hub, the part in the middle of the wheel that the forks attach to, may not be in good shape.  If you can put the hub from your old bike into the new wheel, you'd be better off.  One more thing, having two completely different tires really isn't a good idea.  Tires themselves are really cheap, so if you can, just get a new wheel, and get a replacement tire that matches the back one brand new, or replace both at the same time.
