Question:

Is it okay to spray paint a blued gun barrel?

I want to camouflage my favorite rifle but the barrel is blued. I was wondering if it is okay to spray paint over a blued barrel, or if there is anything i need to do to it before that, or if it is not possible and i need to get one with something like TriNyte coating on it. I am looking for an answer from someone who has done this before and not someone who has just heard about it.

  1. If it is your gun and you want to spray paint it, go for it.  It's your d**n gun, do whatever you want to with it.  If it were me, I'd either get some camo tape and stick it on the gun or take it to a gunsmith and let him send it off and have a professional camo coating put on it.  Spray painting it could end up with you getting paint into parts that you don't want paint in.

  2. Absolutly....

Here is a great tutorial, with photos

  3. I spray painted my custom .308 Remington 700. It looks great to me, and shoots like a sniper gun should. The reciver was blued, and I painted it. When it peels off, I will strip it with some zip strip and paint again.

There are better ways, but they cost more money. I don't care how it looks, as long as it is camo.

If you want a great fit and finish, I suggest getting the gun dipped. There are companies that can reproduce any camo. The entire gun will be in camo!! Its been a while since I considered dipping, but it used to be about 225 dollars for a rifle, 4 years ago.

  4. Yes.  You need to make sure it is clean of oil before you paint.  If you want to take the el cheapo route, Rustolium made an outdoor spray paint series that worked well for camouflage.  Two or three colors and a general idea of what design you want and any stencils is all you'll need.

  5. I have used Brownells Aluma-Hyde II epoxy based spray paint right over the blue on several rifles and shotguns. My oldest Ruger 1022 has worm the Aluma-Hyde II for over ten years. It wears very hard and looks great. Plus very easy to apply, solid or camouflage.

  6. Duracoat is your friend

  7. spray paint won't last long enough on something like that to even consider using it but if u do some research say on cabela's or some other outdoor  store u might be able to find a way to do it with paint that might stay plus it might just be easier to buy a gun that is already camouflaged.
