I'm still in my first month. I need to get some sleep and there's no way I'll be able to get it on my own. My husband thinks it's bad, but we're not 100% sure. Is okay to take ANY type of sleep aid?

Thanks!!

  1. Omg! No!!

  2. I would consult a dr before taking any medication while pregnant.

  3. The Dr ok'd my friend to take Tylenol PM from time to time during her pregnancy to help her sleep but that is it.  Melatonin isn't even monitored by the FDA so there is no way to know for sure if it would harm an unborn baby or not.

  4. Of course you can take melatonin, it's the same stuff in warm milk. I'm not sure about other things, but that's pretty much natural.

  5. A 3mg melatonin may be safe, but try something like warm milk and lying in bed relaxing.  Most birth defects come early in the pregnancy when the cells are first differentiating.  Try to avoid taking any medication or caffeine now.

Lie in bed and focus your mind on your breathing, in and out.  It is both boring and relaxing to do this. It will get you to fall asleep. If you practice it every time you have difficulty sleeping it will help over time and you will have less trouble.

  6. i loved tylenol pm especially in the first trimester. I would definetly ask a nurse or doctor but personally you should be fine. I am 36 weeks and my doctor told me i could take a percoset if my back hurt thaaat bad. but you may find that after that tylenol pm, you may not need one for a while!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. I bought a bottle of melatonin right before I found out I was pregnant and it actually says "not to take while pregnant" right on the bottle, which surprised me. I haven't taken it, but I do remember I was advised by my doctor to take some sleep aids at the very end of my first pregnancy 6 years ago because of all the pains I was having. I bought some regular Wal-Mart brand sleep aid pills and took them as directed on the box.

Add-I actually just went and looked at the bottle...it says "not for pregnant or lactating women". It doesn't say why though...

  8. you can take tylenol pm. it's just tylenol and benadryl, both are safe to take during pregnancy.

  9. Tylonol PM is safe, but good luck, didn't have any effect on me when I was pregnant, I couldn't sleep at all, nothing worked!

  10. I wouldnt take anything without advise from your Dr.  Not even tylenol PM.

My Dr approved regular Tylenol for me to use..  but NOT PM!  Im also not approved to use benedryll!

Dont take anything until your Dr tells you its ok!

Here's some things I do to help get to sleep.

Try a warm bath to relax..  use some aroma therapy, lavender is calming.  Have your hubby give you a back massage to help relax your muscles.

Just lay down too and turn off the lights and cover up.. there's times I've laid down just because my back was hurting, and ended up falling asleep and taking a nap!

  11. No it's not recommended for anyone who is pregnant to take melatonin or sleeping pills. You should consult your doctor before you decide to take anything.

this site might help to explain better:

You can try having a salt bath before you go to sleep, drink warm tea which you can ask your doctor what tea's are ok while being pregnant, a nice message to help you get relaxed, walk during the day so that you can tire yourself, read a book before going to bed. This works because there are times where I can't get any sleep and I do this the next day and it helps me alot. Especially a warm shower and have some chamomile tea before bed time.

Ok and I did a little more research on taking sleeping pills during pregnancy and it is said that it can lower the baby's IQ with the baby's metabolism after birth, the baby will be addicted in utero, and will have withdrawl problems after birth. So please think about it twice. There are lots of us pregnant and would love to take sleeping pills, but we have to think about our baby first.

Good luck and you should mention this to your doctor about not getting any sleep

  12. um...probably not a good idea
