Question:

Is it okay to use the machine "hand wash" setting on a hand wash only dress?

So, i had a birthday party, bought a new dress, and a towards the end of the night, a few drips of drinks have managed to find their way onto my brand new olive coloured 100% polyester dress.

the care label says hand wash only, and i realised that my machine has what it calls a hand wash setting.

which i've discovered means that the spin thing goes to 400, and the temperature is 30.

would it be safe to put my dress in the machine? or will the fabric go funny?

  1. For the first washing I would NOT put it into the washer, no matter what the button says. if you value the dress. hand wash it for the first time. that way you'll Know it's being done correctly. in the washing machine you are still taking a chance of the dress getting caught on something else and pulling, therefore damaging the dress. The amount of time you'll spend hand washing as apposed to washing machine is negligible. better be safe than sorry.

  2. I would only do it if you have a good quality washing machine. I wrecked a very expensive dress in my top-loading washer on the hand wash cycle.. but I know that some of the higher end front-loading washers are fine for delicates. I use my fiancee's Whirlpool washer for all my hand washables and they have come out fine. If you're not sure, I would say to just cold water wash with lots of Woolite so you don't risk ruining your dress. Also if you do put it in the machine, I always put dresses in a mesh lingerie bag.. it keeps it from snagging on anything especially if its a top-loading washer. Sometimes it can get caught on the agitator and rip/damage the fabric, so try a mesh lingerie bag if you do decide to do it in the machine.

  3. yes

  4. Yes, you should be fine to put it in the handwash setting. Just make sure you use cold water.

  5. Any clothing that has the warning of hand washing is best to take to a cleaners or hand wash it yourself and let it dry in room temperature environment.  Don't take it out in the heat to dry, or cold conditions, etc.  Wash and rinse it gently and then hang it on the proper hanger to dry.  In a hallway or open in a bedroom, etc, would be best.

  6. Yes.  I use it all the time.  Just wash it by itself with Woolite if you have it.

  7. There are usually a couple of reasons a fabric says handwash.  The agitator and spin cycle on a washing machine are pretty tough on delicate fabrics.  And, regular detergent can be harsh.  If the hand wash cycle keeps the machine from spinning and you use a gentle detergent like Woolite you should be fine.  I'd wash in cold water and hang it to dry.

Depending on your machine you could take out your dress before the spin cycle starts, the purpose of the spin cycle is to pull water out, the dress will be rinsed already.

  8. I have cuple of clothes That i have used on the hand washing mode in my front loader. Then i hang them to dry.

  9. Yes, I use this feature all the time for my delicate hand wash only items, and ive never ruined anything yet, you should be ok, but if in doubt, hand wash and allow it to drip dry on the washing line(inside out).Hope this helps, Donna x
