  1. Only if you contracted to have paid vacations. He has no state obligation to pay you for time off.

  2. Vacation days are not mandatory by law.

Vacation days are perks of a position with a company.  Recently, a friend of mine started working for a company which gave him 3 weeks vacation as a part of the benefits package.

It is in the best interest of the employer to offer and encourage scheduled time off as lack of flexibility will force people to call in sick at times they need to take care of personal business or just to GET AWAY FROM IT ALL.

  3. No. Paid vacations are a benefit offered by companies to attract employees. If you weren't promised it in writing (handbook), then you aren't entitled to one. There is no law requiring it.

  4. I'm assuming you're a full time employee.  If you don't have a written employment agreement, you'll have to check with your state to see what, if anything, is required by law.  Most companies give 10-15 days a year of personal leave so you can use that for illness, vacation, whatever, but it's possible that your time off isn't paid.

Is it time to start looking for a new job?

  5. Nope.  Your boss is only obligated to pay you for the hours you work.

Paid vacation, paid holidays, and paid sick days are called BENEFITS because they're optional on the part of the employer and they provide the benefit of additional pay to his employees.
