Is it painful to get an Intrauterine Device?

I was considering getting one of them, and I was wondering if anyone who has had one can tell me if it's painful when they put it in and if you are conscious while it's being put in.

Thanks.

  1. It depends on the person how much it hurts. When i had mind put in i fainted. and yes it hurt. they told me to cough out the pain, ya right ! It was like early stages of labor(cervix is manually dilated just a tiny tiny bit). the only good thing is that it is very quick! just takes like 5 seconds.  They would never give you anesthesia for that. Just a motrin. and in resopnse to an answer above, i have had a baby, a 9 1/2 lb baby to be exact, and getting the  iud was just as painfull

About a month ago I started to feel Bad Bad Bad cramp like pain.

I had the paragaurd/no hormone it worked great for 2 yrs then....one day it started to hurt in my left ovari.....I was rushed to the ER with a severe infection. I have never had a std and i had the same partner the whole time but....my body didnt want it in there, . Anyway it was scary staying over night 2 nights in the hospital tests and bloodwork and ultrasounds....vomiting and cramping!  ugh, just go on the nouva ring or take a pill. :)

  2. Yes, it's very painful but over quickly.  Ask your Dr. for a pain medication to take before you go and try to get someone to drive you.  It's worth the pain though.

  3. The amount of pain you feel during IUD placement depends on whether or not you have had a baby.  Women who have not had a baby have a much smaller cervical os (the opening in your cervix).  This makes IUD placement more difficult and often more painful.  I have never had a baby and my IUD placement was pretty painful. You are conscious during the procedure (it only takes a few minutes).  They usually have you take a dose of Motrin before the procedure to help with any cramping you might feel.

I had done some research prior to my IUD placement and had read that "you may feel faint or pass out during the procedure".  I wasn't sure what that meant but I do now!  But I didn't pass out, and the pain didn't last long - less than a minute.  It was totally worth it.  I love my IUD!

  4. THey can be very uncomfortable, so I couldn't go through with it, I just stopped having s*x altogether, maybe you should try that
