Question:

Is it polite to wake up my host?

Over the summer, I stayed at my fiance's sister's house. (This was the first time I ever met them.) Her younger son asked me if I would like to go fishing with him. I accepted, and he told me that he would wake me at 5am. I woke up before he did, but he was still sound asleep.

Turned out he was just kidding about waking up at 5am; but if it had been true, would it have been rude to wake him up even though he was the one who invited me to fish?

  1. Not at all - it would just mean that he needs to watch his sense of humor next time and to learn to say "just kidding!"

After all, some folks do get up at 5!

  2. Maddie,

Never wake up the host even if they invited you. It's a lot better if they realize that they have forgotten to honor a plan than you disturbing a host in anyway. As a guest, you should never take it upon yourself to do anything at someone else's house.

  3. Fishing at 5am is ridiculous. I wouldn't have accepted such an invitation. As for waking him up, no. If you do wake him up it means you are very keen to go fishing at 5am!

  4. That was an obnoxious joke. It would not be rude to wake him up since he was the one who invited you.

  5. Technically speaking, it would have been rude to wake him up. It is the responsibility of the person who extends an invitation to stick to it. If someone makes a date to meet you at a restaurant and doesn't show up, it is not proper to go to their home and track them down. This is a similar situation.

In any case, the boy was very rude to a guest in his home. His behavior was not funny or excusable in any way. If he had apologized profusely to you for oversleeping, then he could be forgiven. Otherwise, if he was 15 yrs old or older, he has no manners whatsoever.

  6. Rude? Heck no!

    It's called "just desserts".

After all it was his idea, no?
