Is it possable too post your self through the royal mail as surely it would be cheaper than some train fares?

Yes you can.  It has been done by some University Students some years ago.  The only problem is that the dimensions of the box are rather restrictive and the cost would be close to a mortgage!

i'm sure it's been done by Guinness book wannabees, people protesting against X and Y, etc.  Can't remember the instances.

Actually wasn't there someone who managed to spend a year or so in the postal system, by contriving redirections etc etc?

Even if you did that, thinking of my experience of the Royal Mail these days, you'd probably end up being delayed, arriving damaged or getting lost in the system!
