I told my child's dr that I think she is allergic to watermelon, because she ate some for the first time and the next day got a rash. The Dr told me she never heard of that before, and acted like there is no such thing as being allergic to watermelon. Is it possible?

  1. yes -keep benedryl handy, read labels, eliminate the offending food from the diet, and follow up with the allergist.

  2. You can be allergic to pretty much anything, h**l there are even people that are allergic to sun.

  3. Yes, of course.  It's possible to be allergic to anything.  Fruit is a common allergen.  You might think about switching doctors.

  4. You can be allergic to anything...and you can develop an allergy at any point in your life- no matter how many times you have been in contact with that same thing "thing" before...

Doctors like to be the only ones who know anything, if you are not satisfied with him, switch to someone who is more open to your feelings, concerns, and questions.  Its important, this is the health of your child we are dealing with here!  When you said that he should have dug for more info and at least offered to do a panel to see what your child is allergic to!

  5. yes, it's definitely possible.  My boyfriend and his mother are both allergic to watermelon, though she grew out of it and he (at almost 20) has just avoided it ever since, so he may or may not have. But it is an allergy, so don't feel discouraged, you were right to note the rash and tell the doctor.  Now find a new doc! =)

  6. Actually it is a common allergy, but usually the rash occurs within a few minutes instead of the next day.  Watermelon is related to ragweed.  People allergic to ragweed may have a problem with watermelon.
