  1. If your existing oil furnace is set up for it and the blower is sized properly, you can have a heat pump installed. The heat pump will heat you home more economically until it gets really cold outside.

    Find a contractor that will perfom a Manual J calculation to size the heat pump properly. Don't accept Rule-of-Dumb sizing procedures (x amount of tons per x amount of square feet). There will be an outdoor temperature sensor that will turn off the heat pump and switch to you oil furnace. This switch-over setting will also have to be calculated. Again, don't accept the contractor just setting the switch-over temperature to a random number just because it works. You are trying to save money so make sure everything is calculated.
