I have been on the same recreational sport team for like 4 or 5 years, and the season is starting up again soon. However, I am a painfully shy person, and I haven't really made friends with anyone on the team, and I may/actually I think, I have come off as rude/snobbish/awkward. I am tired of being the outcast, is is possible to suddenly try to be unshy and seem to change around my entire attitude around these people? How do I start talking to them. advice please?

  1. My brother was painfully shy like you are. He is 11. He started seeing a therapist and taking medicine to help with social anxiety. You probably won't go to these extremes but I'm sure that there are many books about this topic that you could get from the library.

  2. Yes for sure! You can make it seem like you are a whole new person, try and make friends with one of the popular people, then it will be easier to getting to meet new people on the team through him. All you have to do is say hey to people and if a new member arrives on the team, welcome them. Put all your fears and shyness aside and just do it! i know its hard, i was very shy at one time too. Good luck :)

  3. u just start talking to them.........~xoxo ally*

  4. I don't want to be negative, but you're probably right about what they think you're like. I'm just shy, but sometimes people think I think I'm too good to talk to them. But you can't blame them. What else they supposed to think if you've never proved them wrong?

It is possible, but it won't happen all at once. I used to be extremely shy, but over the eight grade year I really came out of my shell. People that I've gone to school with for years just got to know the real me. The first step is the hardest. Just start talking to someone, and it will become easier every time. If you don't make it a big deal in your head; it won't be a big deal in the real world.

Don't expect people who've never been shy to understand what it's like to be shy. It's a hard concept for someone whose never experienced it. Best of Luck! =]
