I am a 6'5", 17 year old male. I just joined my schools volleyball team and I really enjoyed it. Being my first year, and having never played in my life's history.... i was made the middle hitter. I started varsity, but i always envied the role of the setter. I was wondering if it is within my reach to become a setter? If so, I would appreciate tips on good drills that i could do. Thank You for your help..

  1. of course it is! work on your footwork and your form and you can forsure do it. its not like you cant be tall to be a setter; its actually good beacause the setter helps block the outside hitter! so i say go for it!

  2. Good answers from the people above.  The only problem I see is from your team.  You are probably a foot taller than your current setter.  They have to learn to pass higher.

Like they said, buy a ball and keep it with you.  Keep practicing and you will do fine.

  3. I always liked the word: Libero

  4. Defiantely! Colleges love extremely tall setters. Since you know how to play middle, you know how to hit a 1. Just ask your coach about how you would learn to set. Buy and ball and never stop palying with it. If you become half way decent, colleges will pick you up like nothing. Good luck.

  5. of course its possible!! being tall and a setter is an advantage, u have longer reach && are able to set the ball up really high.  giving anyone the time 2 actually set themselves in place for the hit.  your better off as a middle hitter, but since you really want the setter's position, work on it...

get a good workout for your wrists, ur wrists need to be pretty strong for a nice set, annndddd the best yet...set urself up under a basketball net.  anywhere around the three point line (left or right) dont go dead center...well anywho, do 10 sets on each side, have someone toss it to you while you set it up and get it into the hoop. once you've got that down, try back setting.  back setting is never used as much anymore, your coach will DEFF b impressed if you have good back sets!! good luck! =)

  6. Lloy Ball set in three Olympics ('96, '00, '04)

He's 6'8".  He's now back training with the National team again.  Don't let anyone tell you you're too anything to play any position.  However; you better be fast, smart, and able to run a team.  Not a lot drills to coach the intangibles.  Practice setting out-of-system passes as well as in-system passes.  If you're serious about it, get a setting coach, a good one, not some s*****k.  Get into the gym and get a lot of reps.

side note:  What does your team need?  You may have to play middle and train separately as a setter for future teams.  Sometimes sacrifice is the best quality in a teammate

  7. YEA!!

go 4 it... here r some drills u can do!

    set forwards-walking back-in-forth x1

    set backwards-walking back-in-forth x1

    set forwards-jogging back-in-forth x1

set sideways- walk go one way then the other x1

set with grapevine-walk cross one leg over the other and switch around. x1

set with grapevine-jog cross one leg over the other and switch around.x1

set while skipping- skip and set x2

also learn the positions... the hitters will be yelling the positions that they r going 2 hit to..so that means u have 2 set there.

    have fun!!

  8. My friend is about 5'10" and she plays front row. She may not be the best setter in the world, but it's possable. All you need to do is be a great setter. I play city, but my friends teach me things and my friends r in club.

  9. Of course it's possible. You just need to practice. I played the setter position at the varsity level for three years in high school. I was 6'1'', not 6'5'' like you are, but in order to be a setter you need to have great hands, quick feet, leadership ability, and of course to be able to set the ball accurately. The other stuff that comes with being 6'5'' (blocking, hitting, intimidation) is a bonus. Good luck, and work hard.

  10. It does not matter how tall you are! Anyone can set!
