So, I'm writing a picture book, just for my brother (he's two), called Lady Stardust. Basically the story goes like this, Lady Stardust (who looks a bit like me) is the princess daughter of a royal couple who divorced when she was very young. She lives with her father but is still very close to her young half brother, Prince Fransico (who looks a bit like my brother). One day, a week before his fourth birthday he is taken by a Vampire, named Carmen. Lady Stardust must save him her self.

However, there is one problem with this story and thats the end. Stardust gets her brother back by asking out the Vampire.

Is it possible for a book to have g*y characters but be made for children?

  1. Yeah, there are books like that. And it would be a good way to kind of show your brother that being g*y is okay.  I hope your book goes well.

  2. Oh yeah, it's DEFINITELY possible! "Heather Has Two Mommies" is geared towards kids and Heather's mommies are g*y...maybe that's not the best example, but yes, it happens.

  3. g*y characters are only defined as g*y due to their sexual orientation. the fact that "lady stardust" has to submit herself sexually I don't think makes it a children's book (I'm assuming its young children, not like 13 year olds).

If you're concerned about the ethics of the book and being responsible for exposing young people to them, so be concerned about homosexuality, be concerned about the fact that you main character is having s*x with someone more powerful that her who she doesnt love to get something in return.

the moral sounds like, when it comes to life or death, its ok to give up your body, and i dont think thats worth writing a book about because there are alot more realistic morals children can learn and benefit from.

i think youre main character should save her brother in some other way, but she can be g*y is she wants to be.

  4. I don't think a pubisher would publish it, two year olds are afraid of vampires n stuf.....and i dont think parents would buy it.

  5. i dont see a problem with any characters being g*y. but the stiuation is inapproproate all together for children. we dont fix situation is life by offering our bodies. or "asking someone out".

perhaps if the chracters just became friends cause she was lonely. this sounds more like a storey for a teenager or p*****n. if you really want something age specific, take out the vampire (teenage fantasy) and the kidnapping. these will give nightmares.

its great you want to write somethign for your brother. but this just isnt what he needs.

  6. Yes, it's possible to have g*y characters in a children's book, but I have my doubts about a 2 year old being able to follow that plot.

  7. i guess don't suppose it will make sense to them at that age about sexuality, the differences between male and female at that age are not set into them yet so this book would have no effects on them, but it might have effect on your parents? unless the g*y character is necessary then no point in adding it really? and why would the hero ask out the villain? major flaws in this fairytale?

  8. YES...and it should happen more often..after all their parents are NOT teaching them tolerance towards us!

  9. Not in today's world. Homo-phobics would cause h**l!

  10. Tragically, yes.

  11. yeah, there is nothing wrong with being g*y, and children should not be taught that ist only normal to be strait

  12. check out King and King ... a picture book with g*y characters.

i'd have no problem with a g*y relationship in a book for kids (i've read King and King to my kids).  i wouldn't choose a book about vampires or dating for a two-year-old, though.

  13. Totally. Thats how my mother taught my younger brother about homosexuals. Theres nothing wrong with same s*x relationships.

  14. Well, yes and no. People that are homophobic will not allow their children to read it so they will teach them to be as ignorant as they are, but for those of us that are open-minded, great, go for it!

  15. It's your book.  If you were trying to sell it though, it wouldn't work because it doesn't have enough of an appeal for the g*y market and would likely be even less popular among the heterosexual market.  I personally have no issues with it, but see no reason within the story where 'asking out' is a solution except to encourage a friendship.

  16. First of all, i don't have a problem with g*y folk, but i wouldn't encourage my child to read these things as, i think it may put the wrong idea into their heads, when they are older and more mature they will figure out these things naturally. It's a tough question, i can't really answer it without contradicting myself! ;)

  17. Sexual preference has no business in a childrens book.

It makes the book more about s*x than the actual story.

The entire world doesnt care that you are g*y, you need to stop acting like everyone in the world cares and wants to celebrate you becaause of it.

I dont care, and my kids dont care... live your life and stop trying to make me care who you are.

  18. i would never ever let my daughter read something like that, she doesnt need to b taught something un natural,

  19. Yes, but narrow-minded parents won't let their kids read it.  Too bad about them.

  20. Why not? Ren and stimpy were g*y

  21. Of course it is, sadly some people will with have a problem with that but there will always be narrow minded idiots in the world and thankfully they are in the minority these days.

Remember how many people loved the idea of Dumbledore being g*y, a children's book containing a g*y character known about from the start is the next step.

And it has been done before, although not famously - look up a book called 'Two Weeks With the Queen'.

However are you sure the ending as a whole is really suitable for children? Whether the vampire is male or female, I would not call it a very good message for children to have the heroine to save her brother by starting a relationship with the kidnapper.

  22. No, that's a disorder and you shouldn't teach children that people with such disorder are normal.
