  1. As a 34 year veteran of dental hygiene, I can tell you that unfortunately, there are less and less full time jobs.  Many doctors choose to have a couple of part timers (to save on benefits??) ANYWAY...there are full time jobs in Public Health, the Veterans Administration, and  similar settings  with great benefits, unfortunately, the pay is much lower than the public sector.  I went into Public Health, so I could receive pension and health insurance.  It was a trade off, but I love the fact that,  I  can always do the right thing for my patient, and I am not motivated by,  or forced to  produce.  I had jobs where we had daily goals, and if we didn't reach them, we had better have a reason why! What a difference working in a non money making environment. I think living in DFW, you have a much higher chance of finding a job in one of these settings than in a more rural area.  Good luck!!!!

  2. Depends on what is offered in your area....

While you are young 40 hr weeks are fine...

but....it is usually easier on yourself to do 30 hr weeks....

And  many offices have shared positions with multiple hygienists......

as I said ....it just depends on the office and the area.....

  3. TO GET WORK BENEFITS LIKE INSURANCE YOU HAVE TO WORK A FULL SCHEDULE YET MANY DENTAL OFFICES WILL NOT HIRE FOR A 40 HOUR WEEK. WITH THE MONEY PAID TO HYGIENISTS OBTAINING PRIVATE INSURANCE IS COMMON.

WHY WON'T THEY HIRE A FULL 40 HR, WEEK?

    IT KEEPS THEIR COSTS DOWN.
