Is it possible for a gerbil not to trust anybody?

got a gerbil (male) from petsmart and he always runs away from my hand and one i pick him up he trys to run off my hand.

Of course it's possible! :) You just have to keep trying and when he stays on your hand give him a treat as a reward and try to hand play with him as much as possible.

Yes, it's possible. However, with your gerbil, it's not that he won't ever trust you. It's just that you need to work to gain his trust. Taming is very important. Just try handling him daily and earning his trust. He'll become more comfortable with you handling him as the days pass. There are several ways to do this.

Please keep in mind that gerbils are social and should be kept in same s*x pairs. You really should have gotten him a male friend. It's not too late to go back and get another one. You should put a split up, though, just in case.

gerbils all have different personalities.  i have five gerbils.  four of them are paired up.  our other gerbil is by himself.  he is very dominant and likes to be alone.  i tried the split cage method and that didn't even work.  he kept trying to attack the other gerbil.  he grew up with two other gerbils and they were doing fine with each other until he got older.  

since then he just hasn't been social.  i tried keeping my hand in the cage for a while each day and he just wants nothing to do with me.  he will take food out of my hand but does not want to be picked up.  

my other gerbils like to have companions and are generally friendly with me.  so after this experience i tend to think their personality plays a part in things.

i would try keeping your hand still in the cage for a little bit, giving him some food out of your hand, and just be a little patient.  he might get used to you after that and allow you to pick him up.  if not he may just not be a social gerbil.
