  1. My friends and I use to play in it all the time, like double dare. When we got to where we would sink we just swam, like in water. Its more buoyant so you stay up easily, but you aren't going to go very fast because it's so much more dense than water.

  2. Yes.  You can sort of 'swim' out of it by laying down in the quick sand so it supports your weight then just swim out of it... forget the Hollywood stuff... in real life you can get out.

  3. Yes.  Lay down flat to increase your surface area and move with a swimming, crawling motion towards solid ground.  If you can reach the edge grab some grass, tree limbs etc and pull yourself to the solid ground still laying flat.

  4. Actually, quicksand is rarely deeper than a few feet, so you wouldn't sink. If you somehow managed to get into quicksand deeper than you are tall, then you should just remain motionless. You will then float to the top.

  5. quick sand is not like what you see in the movies....that is hollywood....quicksand is made up of sand and salt water....what actually happens when you go into the quick sand is your body will actually float because of the salt water....you then just have to find a tree branch or something to pull yourself out......check out national geographic if you don't believe me......good ole' hollywood......our society believes way to much in the movies...

  6. Yes.  People sink in quicksand because they remain vertical, yelling "Help!  Help!" instead of helping themselves.  If you find yourself sinking in quicksand or deep mud, forget about trying to keep your clothes clean.  Lie down to spread your weight out, and crawl/slither to firm land.

  7. yes bear grills did it on the discovery channel during a man v/ wild episode

  8. Check the Mythbusters site.  The danger of quicksand is heavily over-rated.

  9. They did this on mythbusters.

You float in water, so you are fine in quicksand.

  10. Yes.

Quicksand is actually composed of very fine, extremely saturated ordinary sand.  As such, it is very dense, and the human body can float on its surface.  When struggling in a vertical position, though, a person digs himself in deeper.

To escape, one has only to relax and wait to float to the surface.  Also, most quicksand is quite shallow, far less than the four to six feet necessary to fully engulf an adult human being.

  11. Because quick sand is composed of alot of water, you will sink only to a point, but because you are buoyant, you will stop sinking and not totally sink unless you wriggle alot.

Maybe to escape it, you could add either air or water to the sand around you in order to break the suction. Who has a portable air compressor in the truck?

If you shape it in your mind, you will find it in your life.

  12. waist deep is about as far as you will sink. the only real danger is if you're near water, you could drown in high tide.

the more you wiggle as you go down, the faster you go down, which is prolly why people say "the more you struggle the more you sink." The viscosity increases when there is movement, but, like everyone above me has said, your body "floats" in the sand, so you won't go in all the way. Once you're stuck, move your legs a bit to create space. Then try to crawl out slowly. Don't have friends pull you out, it will take a lot of strength, or they might just pull half of you up.

so yes. it is possible :)
