Question:

Is it possible for a person to get turned down at an interview because, they just suck at life?

What I mean is, say an individual has all the qualifications they need for a particular job. But that person is always turned down because, most people are better at that job than that individual. Also, most others maybe more qualified than that person.

What would you do if you was this guy I know, who is starting to get heavily discouraged? He didn't exactly make the best grades in college, but he did get by with enough to graduate. He feels like he never made any real accomplishments in life, always just making it by. He also lacks any kind of talent, was never good at athletics at all, and is not the smartest person I know.

Should he just go kill himself?

  1. the reason that your friend is probably not getting jobs is because he has a negative attitude and the interviewers are picking up on that.  interviewers are seeing not only if the candidate is qualified, but if they would fit into the company's culture.  with all due respect, your friend sounds like he would be a real pain in the a*s to work with, day to day.  qualifications help for a job, and if he isn't qualified enough, he should either 1. modify his job search 2.  get additional education.  the fact that he feels that he is "just getting by" sounds to me like either laziness, or depression.  possibly a combo of both.  he needs to get some therapy to get to the bottom of things...possibly some meds as well.

killing himself is not the answer.  it never is.  first, it's a sin.  secondly, it is a cop out.  i'm sure that your friend has people that love him, that would be very hurt if he were to end it all.  it isn't worth it.

  2. Believe me, the majority of people in the world don't have any talent and are not extraordinarily smart. Tell your friend not to worry.

If he's equally qualified he should get the job sooner or later. just tell him not to lose confidence- thats the only thing that can get him down.Hard work will surely pay off.

  3. This "guy you know" should definitely NOT kill himself.  He just needs a way to build enough self confidence to impress that prospective employer.

My advice is to do a little more than he "needs to get by."  Experienced interviewers can sense that kind of attitude from a mile away.  So, if he wants to succeed at job interviews he should (just to name a few things)

    1. Have a current resume.

    2. Dress appropriately.  Don't wear nose rings and droopy pants to an interview for a bank.  The skate park yeah, but not a conservative environment.

    3. Be courteous and polite (this gets you past the receptionist, and he/she has more power than you think.)

    4. Be able to tell an interviewer what makes him a good employee.  In other words, be able to sell himself. He needs to tell them if he likes to be on time, if he learns quickly, tell them if he finds it easy to fit in and work with new groups of people.  He needs to think of any qualities he has that would be useful to an employer and sell them.  The best qualified guy doesn't always get the job.  The best fit does.

  4. To be honest having the attitude that you suck at life isn't going to be appealing to anybody in any situation.  My advice would be why not just improve your life, then there is no question to ask.

I have a website that deals with this that might be useful, some good links too.

    good luck

  5. uhm i wouldnt say killing himself is the best plan of action.

Try other things. Something will eventually come along.. right?

and then if it doesnt.. killing might be the best plan of action

but id give it 3, 4 more years

    :D
