  1. www.familysearch.org.

You just need the name, birthdate, etc. of a ralative who has been dead for a long time.Type it in, and you'll find more info.

  2. Absolutely!

First, start writing down the facts and approximations (birth date and location, marriage date and location, death date and location, and any other residences) you know about yourself, your parents, you grandparents, and even your great grandparents if you have any info on them already.

Then ask your parents and other relatives to help you go back another generation if possible, and to verify the dates and places you've written down.

Then you can start searching for records to back up what you know, and go back even further in your family history!

There are tons of free sites and many subscription sites, I started out with the free ones such as:

    familysearch.org

    usgenweb.org

    cyndislist.com

    findagrave.com

I'd recommend you focus on one branch of the tree at a time, it's less confusing and not overwhelming that way.  For example:  your Mom's father's ancestors.

There are many of us with subscriptions to Ancestry.com on this forum, if you get stuck at any point along the way, we'll help you find your dead ancestors.

Good luck!  And welcome to the genealogy enthusiasts group!  :o)
