Yes, it is possible, but you will have to get approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board. The main criteria that you have to meet are: you should be in Australia for more than 12 months; live in the property you buy; and you must sell up when your visa expires and you leave the country.

to BUY a house, as far as I know, is not possible unless you're a PR, or you buy it under someone else's name (who should be a PR/citizen of course)
