Is it possible for a text message to be traced?

I know that a cell phone can be tracked or traced from what area they are in by the tower it came off of can the same be done from a text message?

  1. Jeff is correct.  

    It doesn't matter if you make a call or send a text, you're still using a cell tower to transmit.  It can be traced.

  3. of course it is, any data signal is recorded, or can be traced, trust me if the cops wanted to know who sent what they could find out easily.

  4. That depends on the carrier, their storage policy on the server, but if you are asking if text messages in terms of locality can be traced the same as phone calls under the same set of circumstances, of course.  Cell signals are cell signals.  

  5. There's a free tool at http://www.unitedsleuths.com/reverse-pho... which searches all the free resources online such as Whitepages and Google to bring back such information as the location and owner name.

    If it can't find the information for free, it shows you the best place to find it.
